KIBALE NATIONAL PARK
Located in western Uganda, Kibale forest National Park is home to 13 primate species including the red colobus, velvets and L’Hoest’s monkey and Chimpanzees. The shady forests provide botanists and butterfly enthusiasts with a rare treat. For birders, 335 species of birds have been recorded including the guinea fowl, great turaccos and parrots. An estimated 600 chimps inhabit the forest. Community- based eco-tourism has been developed here, an array of native plants, animal’s foods, medicines and plant products are found here. The canopy rings with bird calls. Tree species like wild rubber trees, polita figs and candelabra euphorbia are common here.

Geographical location: western Uganda, 35 km south from Fort Portal
Altitude: 1,110-1,590m
Physical features: kibale is a unique moist habitat,
at the foot of the Ruwenzori Mountains. Guided walk takes you through
the forest and along the Kinyanchu River.
Vegetation: predominantly mature tropical rain forest, with some trees
of 55m height. In the bottom of the valley, waterlogged soils support
swamp forest characterized by lower tree diversity and abundance of semi-woody
plants. The protected area has variety of medical plants; wild coffee
grows in the area.
Fauna: the mammals that includes 12 species of primate of which is the chimpanzee. Other animals include the bush buck, red duiker, blue duiker, bush pig, and civet Buffalo, giant forest hog, and forest elephant are rare.
Bird life: over 330 bird species of which some are endemic.

near the kanyanchu visitor centre. There is basic lodging in nearby trading
centre of Bigodi and Nkingo, and the accommodation in Fort Portal, 35
km to the north, then the Luxury lodges include Ndali lodge and Mantana
luxury tented camp.
