MOUNT ELGON NATIONAL PARK

Known as the mountains of the sun, Mt. Elgon offering stunning scenery of wooded slopes, caves, gorges and hot springs. A variety of bird species and animals such as elephant, leopard, hyena, buffalo, bushbuck and duiker can be seen during the trek. A visit to the majestic Sipi falls offers stunning views. This tour also offers ancient customs and beliefs of the Bagisu people with their circumcision rituals during the circumcision season.

Size: 1,145 sq km

District: Kapchorwa

Geographical Location: Eastern Uganda on the boarder with Kenya.

Altitude: to 4,321 m

Physical features: Mountain Elgon is an extinct volcano, with a large caldera, with Wagagai as its highest peak, the crater covers over 40 kms at the top of the mountain, surrounded by a series of rugged peaks.

Vegetation: Four altitudinal belts common to afro-montane system: afro-alpine, sub alpine or heath, bamboo, and montane forest. Unique plants include giant Lobelia, giant groundsel, and giant heather, Bamboo forest grows from the western and southern part of the park.

Animals:
some one interested in wildlife will be in position to spot some primates such as; black and white colobus monkey, blue monkey and a hundreds of bird species including golden winged tucazze, sund birds, Ross’s, Hartlaubs and turacos, black and white casqued, crowned hornbills, the endangered lammergeier and Jackson francolin which are found no where else in Uganda.

Activities: Mountain hiking, Culture tours, Nature walks t o Sippi falls.

Local People: The Bagisu people are the dominant people living in the area who are still practicing traditional circumcision and believe in witch craft for spiritual powers.

Accommodation facilities: Simple accommodation facilities are available inside the park at Kapkwata Rest house, in Kapchora at Crow Nest camp, Lacam Lodge, Sipi falls Lodge are some of the facilities, others are in Mbale town.
