LAKE MBURO NATIONAL PARK
Located in an extensive wetland, L.Mburo has attractive scenery with
interwoven hills and meandering shallow valleys, it is the only park to
contain an entire lake. Lake Mburo boasts of herds of Impala, zebra, waterbuck,
eland and oribi these inhabit the open plains with a greater concentration
of bufallo found in the southern marshes. Mburo has rich flora and acacia
woodland, succulent aloes, climbing vines and euphorbia. Magnificent boat
rides on the lake are also organized.
Size: 260 sq km
District: Mbarara
Geographical location: Southern section, about 243 km
south of Kampala.
Altitude: approx 1,670 m
Physical features: The west of the park are a series of rugged
hills overlooking flat-bottomed, open valleys.
Vegetation: Acacia woodland, open grassland and wetland.
Animals: Impala, buffalo, zebra, eland, topi, , duiker,
waterbuck, klipspringer, rock hyrax, crocodile and hippo.
Birdlife: A wide variety of water and dry land species
include; shoebill stork, the Abyssinian ground hornbill, and the saddlebill
stork.
Local People: The people in the area bordering the park
are traditional, pastoral Bahima people, known for there famous long horned
Ankole cattle. As a visitor enters the park will realize a lot of these
animals as they graze near and inside the park.
Visitor facilities: Three campsites, banda’s and 2 luxurious Tented Camp in the park.
