RWENZORI MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK
Being the only block ranges in E. Africa, Rwenzori Mountains Known as
‘mountains of the moon’, rise to 5100 m above sea level. The
permanent covering of snow on six peaks and three glaciers together with
luxuriant vegetation together make mountaineering and hiking the main
attraction. A seven day’s hike with climatic conditions of occasional
rain, mad, forest vegetation and high altitude make it a challenge to
hikers but its never the less an exciting adventure.

Altitude: Peak to 5,109m
Physical features: Rwenzori Mountain has permanent snow
on the six peaks with 3 peaks having glaciers the trails are developed
in such a way that hikers can be able to move freely while ascending and
descending. A number of rivers and lakes can be found here on the afro-alpine
areas.
Vegetation: with a lot of plants are found here, especially the most growing
giant lobelia plant, other plants are common, Giant tree heathers, blackberry,
cuckoo flower, everlasting flower, giant groundsel growing on afro-alpine
areas.
Animals: Chimpanzees, Rwenzori colobus monkey, black
and white colobus and blue monkey are the primates which predominate the
park trails. Other animals rarely present are the elephant, bushbuck,
giant forest hog, hyrax and leopard.
Birdlife: Rwenzori turaco, handsome francolin, olive
pigeon and white necked ravens are common here.
Activities here: Hiking and Nature walks.
Local People: The Bakonjo people live on the slops, they
are believed to be strong and energetic do not miss to as one of them
to carry your bags while hiking the mountain.
